When choosing an E-Bike generally riders have multiple questions in mind especially if they are buying an E-Bike for daily commuting; It’s regarding weather. So, can you ride an electric bike in the rain?

Yes. A bit of rain shouldn’t mean leaving your Hygge E-Bike parked in the garage.  Riding in wet conditions is slightly different from riding on a dry day, but once you know how your E-Bike is designed to ride in wet conditions, it's easier to ride with confidence.

Are Hygge Electric Bikes Waterproof?

All Hygge E-Bikes have an IPX5 rating as per IEC 60529 international standard of water protection.

IPX5 is a simple definition: the motor, battery casing and electrical components are built for low-pressure water jets from all directions. The Hygge E-Bike can easily handle rain, road spray and a wet commute.

IPX5 does not protect from full immersion. Never enter a deep puddle, flooded roads or standing water. In addition, pressure washing should be avoided as it can drive water through seals and into electrical parts of your E-Bike.

What About the Battery?

One of the most important parts that must be protected from moisture is the battery. The battery is cleverly housed in the frame of a Hygge E-Bikes, which helps to protect it from direct rain and road spray.

After a wet ride:

  • Ensure that the battery compartment is properly closed.

  • Never remove the battery while it or the bike is still wet.

  • Allow the bike and battery area to dry before charging.

  • Never connect the charger if the charging port or connectors are wet.

  • Allowing it to dry thoroughly in a few minutes helps to benefit the battery and electrical system.

Learn about how to ride safely on wet roads

  • When riding on wet roads, avoid the usual riding patterns to reduce the risk of losing grip, and increase the stopping time.

  • Slow down and give yourself more space to operate on the road. Slow down earlier than you might otherwise. Turn around slower, and don't make sudden movements, especially on painted road markings, metal covers or other slick surfaces.

  • Minimize riding through puddles. Judging their depth can be difficult and deep water may cause the electrical components to be submerged in more water than they are designed to survive.

  • Heavy rain can also decrease visibility, so be sure to turn on your lights, and wear reflective clothing or accessories.

After a wet ride, here are some guidelines to help care for your bike.

  • After returning home, clean and dry the frame, battery area and motor housing with a clean dry cloth. Specially look for moisture that could get trapped around seals, connectors and moving parts.

  • Likewise, regularly clean and lubricate the chain and drive train, which can be washed away in wet conditions and may promote corrosion.

  • Don't use a hose or pressure washer. Usually damp cloths and mild cleaners will suffice.

With Hygge E-Bikes you will be prepared for every day wet weather summer rides. Normal rain and road spray should not be a problem as it is protected electronics and an integrated battery with an IPX5 rating.

The key is to simply ride with care and give your E-Bike a quick wipe down after wet rides to avoid any issues.
